From the Director's Desk:


Welcome to the First edition of the CRTC Compass Magazine. You've become accustomed to receiving the Compass newsletter each week, but this communication has a different focus. 

First and foremost, it is not about daily COVID challenges, which in itself should be a relief. Rather it is a series of stories about how the CRTC makes a difference in people's lives. Our goal is to target a number of stories for each edition that will provide some perspective on why CTE, and specifically the CRTC, is so vital an experience to a high school student’s trajectory. These are the stories we've been dying to tell this year.

 

In this issue, you will read how Chef Bob McIntosh, our Culinary & Pastry Arts teacher, has navigated COVID restrictions and challenges to safely provide his students with a robust, hands-on learning experience. There are a couple stories highlighting CRTC+ students having amazing senior year experiences, and you’ll read how the publishing of our new CRTC brochure marks the beginning of our most challenging recruitment season ever, and how you can actively partner with us in our efforts to recruit up to 450 new students in a school year where we are unable to hold recruitment assemblies, tours or open houses.

  April is Admissions Month at CRTC Over the past several weeks CRTC staff has had to make some pretty tough decisions as they’ve sifted through applications to determine the make up September’s Year I classes, and have carefully reviewed each first year student’s SPUR assessments to decide who would be invited back to complete their second year. Year I students and new applicants already should have received notification letters or emails that inform them of their status and provide instructions for next steps. Any student who has not yet received notification should talk to their CRTC teacher or call the CRTC office. Each year we have more qualified students than we have open seats in our programs, so it’s necessary to make some difficult decisions. Some students who are not outright accepted or invited back have been placed on a waitlist for any available openings before the next school year, or have been asked to sign a conditional contract, which outlines a number of steps student

  Meeting the COVID Challenge: CRTC Automotive Technology COVID-19 has changed our lives in ways unimaginable just 11 months ago. And as we navigate this new reality, the students, teachers and staff at the Concord Regional Technical Center have been stepping up and sorting out the changes and challenges of providing a hands-on, career-focused education in the midst of a hands-off educational environment. Automotive Technology teachers Scott Mayotte and Jesse Gregoire have had a mix of online and in-person students in their classrooms and shops much of this school year, and have been aggressively using technology to bridge the two. “Technology and flexibility are the keys,” said Mr. Mayotte, who has been teaching the Automotive Technology program for the past seven years. “Dealing with multiple sending schools, we can have part or all of our class logging in remotely at any time, so we have to be prepared to transition quickly from live to remote, or to do both simultaneously.” When th

  Meet Our Teachers:  Gail Beaudoin, Criminal Justice CRTC programs are a blend of rigorous academics and applied learning that provide students with the opportunity to explore their interests, talents and career ambitions. The lynchpin in these programs is the unique character of the CRTC teacher, who typically has years of industry experience before making the transition to the classroom.  The CRTC Criminal Justice teacher, Gail Beaudoin, has over three decades of law enforcement experience, including 11 years as a Criminal Bureau detective, and was the first female in the Chelmsford, MA, Police Department to attain the rank of Lieutenant. She holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from UMass, and spent 15 years as an adjunct professor in Criminal Justice at UMass, Lowell.
